Residential Renovation
The primary goals of the renovation of this 1960's ranch house were to enhance the appeal of a tree-filled lakeside site and to create a compartmented yet interconnected sequences of spaces that would graciously cater to the needs of married couple and to their enjoyment of time with extended family and grandchildren.
To serve the first goal, we sought to create a simple interior palette that would allow reflections of the exterior to extend the perceptual space of the house. Maximizing windows into the kitchen, living, and dining spaces allows as much as light as possible into the space, while two dramatically different approaches to material lend each space a distinctive character.
These two approaches to material -- the richness of a walnut slat wall in the dining room and the minimalism of velvety-smooth cabinetry in the kitchen -- imbue each space with a unique personality tailored to their respective use.
The slat walls in the dining room serve an additional purpose, that of concealment. Behind each wall are concealed numerous storage closets and a guest bath.
In the kitchen, the neutral, satin color of the cabinets creates a backdrop for reflecting nature, and is counter-balanced by a black stone-clad island. This dark, volumetric element is both a visual and metaphorical anchor of the space: the axis about which home and family life revolves.
